英语小故事五：The Dog and the Shadow（狗和影子）
It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now, on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.
Moral：Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
一只狗嘴里衔着一块肉，走过一条河上面的桥，看见他自己在水里的影子，以为是另一只狗，那时狗衔着的肉，比他自己的还要大一倍 。因此他仍掉自己的那一块，狠狠地扑向那只狗，想夺到那一块较大的肉 。结果两头都落了空，因为他想要抓取在水中的那一块，只不过是一个影子，而原来的那一块，也被水冲走了 。
寓意：谨记，切莫因追逐幻影而丢失已有的东西
英语小故事六：Apple（苹果）
A man was going to the house of some rich person. As he went along the road, he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. He said, "I do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat." Then he took the apples and threw them away into the dust.
He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said, "I cannot go to the rich man\'s house today, for I cannot get over the river."
He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples, and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.
Moral：Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.
一个男人要去一个富人的房子 。当他沿着路走时，他看见路边有一箱好苹果 。他说:“我不想吃那些苹果;因为那富足人必给我许多食物 。他会给我很好的食物吃 。”然后他拿起苹果，把它们扔到尘土里 。

英语小故事七：A bird in a dunghill（粪堆里的小鸟）
